4 Tips for Preventing Frozen Pipes This Winter

Last year brought some of the coldest temperatures to the DFW area, and this year it looks like there could be much of the same for the winter forecast. Many homeowners were caught off guard and not prepared for the cold, icy snap that ran through the Dallas area. At Bryan & Bryan Inspections, we want you to be as prepared as possible. This is why we are sharing some helpful tips for preventing frozen pipes in your home. Now is a good time to take action and be ready for any hazardous freezing weather that may be on its way.

4 Tips for Preventing Frozen Pipes This Winter

1. Install Pipe Insulation

Insulating the pipes of your home is a very affordable way to keep the pipes from freezing. Be sure to purchase insulation that is specifically designed for plumbing. Begin with areas that are more susceptible to freezing such as pipes in unheated, interior spaces of your home like the basement, garage, or attic.

2. Keep Cabinets Open

If there are freezing temperatures forecasted for the DFW area, keep the bathroom and kitchen cabinets open. This allows warm air to circulate around the plumbing and reduces the chance that the interior pipes will freeze. On a side note, if you have small children or pets in your home, remove all chemical-laden products and cleaners from the cabinets before leaving the doors open.

3. Allow Faucets to Drip

Another simple way to ward off frozen pipes is to leave a faucet or two running during the coldest winter months. Running water is much harder to freeze than standing water. The movement of the running water will prevent any ice or blockages from forming in your home’s plumbing.

4. Open All Interior Doors

Keeping the interior doors open in your home works much the same as keeping the cabinet doors open in your kitchen and bathroom. When all the doors are open, warm air can radiate through your home. This keeps your house at a more consistent and even temperature, which will also help to prevent interior pipes from freezing.
